With registration now open, I have been getting some questions about ice skates. So, here are some tips I love to share with new skaters!
- Buying used skates is always great when trying out the sport for the first time. Play it Again Sports is a great spot for used skates. You can also try figure skating and hockey shops – many times they have used skates as well.
- When buying skates, I suggest sticking to figure skates or hockey skates. Stay away from plastic molded skates with buckles (they come undone easily and aren’t great for support), and the double blade skates for littles. They easily fall off and don’t have enough support too! You want a skate that provides sturdy ankle support.
- Skate sizes should be 1/2-1 size smaller than regular shoe size.
- Wear a normal / thin pair of socks with your skates. Don’t use multiple pairs of socks or really thick socks.
- Never wrap the lace around the ankle! Instead, tie up and down the skate (as pictured), and tie snuggly for hockey skates (if laces are too long, get properly fitted laces!).
- Make sure your skates are sharpened before stepping onto the ice! If you decide to go with a new pair of skates, many times they don’t come sharpened. And, if you have a used pair of skates, they may be dull.
